Summer Fun That Secretly Counts as Exercise

With summer right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to get outside, soak up the sun, and—without even realizing it—get in a great workout. The best kind of exercise? The kind that doesn’t feel like exercise. Movement should be fun, not just another task on your to-do list. And in the summer, there are so many ways to stay active without stepping foot in a gym.

Fun Summer Activities That Keep You Moving:

  • Kayaking or Paddleboarding – A killer core and arm workout that feels like an adventure.

  • Swimming – Full-body, low-impact, and great for cooling off in the heat.

  • Hiking – Get your steps in while exploring a new trail or park.

  • Biking – Whether it’s a leisurely ride or a more intense trail, cycling is great for endurance and leg strength.

  • Outdoor Sports – Beach volleyball, frisbee, soccer, or even a casual game of tag with the kids counts!

  • Dancing – Summer concerts, backyard barbecues, or just blasting music in your living room—dancing is a legit cardio workout.

  • Gardening & Yard Work – Squatting, lifting, pulling—it’s basically functional strength training!

Why This Kind of Movement Works:

  • You’re more likely to stick with it because it’s enjoyable.

  • It’s often social, which makes it more fun and engaging.

  • Many outdoor activities provide a mental health boost (hello, sunshine and fresh air!).

  • It breaks up routine—sometimes, the gym can feel repetitive, and switching things up keeps movement exciting.

Real Talk from Me: As much as I love structured workouts, some of my favorite ways to move are the ones that don’tfeel like a workout at all. Kayaking? Feels like an adventure. Gardening? My version of stress relief. And let’s be real—there’s no better excuse to jump in a lake than calling it “exercise.” If you’ve been feeling stuck in your fitness routine, summer is the perfect time to switch things up and rediscover movement in a way that actually excites you.

Try This: This week, pick one fun activity that gets you moving without feeling like a workout. Maybe it’s a swim, a hike, or even a dance party in your kitchen. Movement should add to your life—not feel like a punishment!

Always in your corner,

xoxo,

Paige
